A New Treatment Option for Sensitivity Prevention
Happens to all of us right? Though we try not to admit it in large crowds. No matter how hard we try, we all get post operative sensitivity at one time or another. The funny thing is, at least in my office, it is completely unpredictable. I can repeat the same steps, with the same materials, procedure after procedure, and still have sensitivity issues with direct or indirect restorations on occasion.
I have tried everything, Gluma, Voco, two coats of prime and bond, calcium hydroxide, flowable composite, even layering bulk fill over traditional composites. None were predictable, few were easy to use, and some I believe may have actually caused the sensitivity I was trying to prevent. Then came Telio CS Desensitizer by Ivoclar.
Telio CS has two basic components. Glutaraldehyde and Polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEG-DMA). Glutaraldehyde is a reagent capable of bonding to amine groups while PEG-DMA is a wetting agent that carries the bonded protein complex into the dentin tubules and basically occludes them to reduce sensitivity. The Telio CS is placed after etching when needed and prior to your bonding system of choice with a slight increase in bond strength resulting after the application.
