Increasing CEREC Preparartion Efficiency by Using Onset
By John M Tumminelli, DDS
I started using a new product called Onset by Onpharma and have quickly realized that this product is decreasing my prepartion time for CEREC restorations and multiple other procedures. The way I understand the science behind this is a carpule of xylocaine is very acidic and that’s why it hurts when we inject (even slowly). Also, the xylocaine can’t start working until our body neutralizes the pH. The average time for pulpal anesthesia (without Onset) is seven and a half minutes. Onset claims to achieve pulpal anesthesia in 90 seconds. That is a six minute time savings. WOW. This enables us to know if we miss a block much sooner than before (of course I never miss a block - lol).
What have I noticed since I started using Onset? Patients don’t wince while I’m injecting. The onset is lightning fast and they have less post op soreness around the injection site. Also, I have been using less carpules for blocks. And this is what it’s all about…. a much better patient experience.
I envision this technology to be a game changer when we are working on mandibular molars. For the last 15 years I have been giving two carpules for a block on adults and many times they need more. When I have to stop and give more this destroys my efficiency, increases patient stress, and puts me behind schedule. All resulting in more stress for me. Since I have been using Onset I have been using one carpule (most of the time) to achieve complete anesthesia.
Three days ago I was doing a CEREC restoration on #19 for a patient that I grew up with. I used Onset and gave one carpule of xylocaine. He was completely comfortable for the entire procedure. One month before this I did a CEREC restoration on #18 for him and he reminded me that he needed many more shots. The patients always remember this. I didn’t remember but he did. He said this was a much better experience.
I encourage you to use the cerecdoctors.com mobile app and time your CEREC cases. I believe your prep time will decrease using Onset.
